About
Mackay High School is situated over 100 miles from a traffic light in the remote, rural Big Lost River Valley. The county is over 94% federally owned and managed. The valley has few opportunities for future employment--with the exception of the growing industry in fish production and fish biology. The school currently has a small aquaculture lab in a modified greenhouse. With this fish lab students have produced and released fish into local waters in collaboration with the Idaho Fish and Game and the United States Forest Service.
What I’m Raising Money For
Mackay High School is raising funds for a 1400 square foot building addition that will allow students to rear fish in a state-of-the-art facility that will be considered a disease free facility by the Idaho Fish and Game. The fish produced in this facility can be released in waters throughout the state. Students will be able to learn the skills in order to take the local jobs that exist--instead of having to find work elsewhere.
Why You Should Give
Mackay High School is a title one school situated in a valley with a small tax base (schools can't levy the 94% of the county that is owned by the federal government). Many rural schools struggle with diverse course offerings and providing the same types of opportunities that larger schools can offer. By giving to this project you are helping a rural, remote school have a fish lab that will be unique in the entire country.
You will also be recognized in your donation on either a metal cut-out of a fish or on a plaque. Here are the donors and club levels that have brought us to the point that we can go public with our fundraising--we are so close to making this project a reality.

As most of you know, Paige Hanson won the 50/50 raffle at the company banquet. Today we were able to present the check from the 50/50 raffle to the Mackay FFA Fish Lab. They were thrilled to receive it and will put it to good use towards the new fish lab they are building. This is such a great program and I am personally thankful to Clear Springs Foods for the support of these kids and the program.

We got to meet the science teacher and some of the students at the Mackay BBQ, and were impressed. I have some background in aquatic ecology, and we are Idaho Master Naturalists, providing volunteer support to Idaho Fish and Game projects, so we realize the value of this worthwhile project.
