About

In 1977 Santa Barbara oarsman Richard Sundquist transferred to UC Davis and founded Men’s Crew at UC Davis. Shortly thereafter, team members drove the very first UCD racing shell from the East coast to West Sacramento to fully establish the Men’s Crew team. Hanging in the boathouse, this wooden boat is a reminder of our origins and of the torch that we have chosen to carry for past and for future Davis rowers.

Through the years, our team has been formed by dedication, passion, and hard work. The names of past oarsmen who built by hand the Curt Rocca Boathouse can be seen etched into the concrete foundation. Year after year, students of various athletic abilities enter the family of rowers that has been created here at Men’s Crew. We’ve produced inspiring Olympians, national level athletes, diligent leaders and team players. Some of the hardest working people and most unique personalities you’ll ever encounter have likely been apart of this incredible sport. Rowing has given us some of our fondest memories and many of our life long friends. We thank all of the past UC Davis Rowers for their passion and effort helping to build us into the team we are today.

And now you have the chance to show your support for the current athletes and coaches. Every donation has a positive impact on this amazing team.

    Update from Matthew Helkey

Hello friends and family, As you may already know I have joined the men's rowing team at UC Davis. It has been an absolutely amazing experience to participate in a very vigorous sport with a fun and committed team. The rowing team here at Davis was hit hard by the pandemic, but is now in the process of ramping up again to become a competitive team. We are holding an Ergathon Fundraiser (rower's call rowing machines ergs) where we will keep several rowing machines running for 12 hours straight. Donations will be used to upgrade and maintain our well loved equipment, and in general keep this historic team going and competitive with clubs across the country! For those of you unfamiliar with the sport it is not a cheap one, new racing boats cost over $50k, each oar is around $500, and the list goes on. We are lucky enough to have two top of the line racing shells graciously donated by alumni, however most of our practices are done in older second hand shells to keep wear and tear on the racing shells down. Keeping our older equipment in top condition is essential to prevent equipment failures from eating into practice time. If this sounds like a worthy cause your donations would be much appreciated by myself and all my fellow rowers.
