About

CavBots is a self-funded competition robotics team that provides hands-on learning in the fields of engineering and programming. Students at College Park High School in The Woodlands, TX get an amazing opportunity to design and build robots from scratch. Each year students are given a new challenge and must collaborate to design, fabricate, assemble, program and eventually compete against other teams from around the world. The students develop a wide variety of technical skills as well as interpersonal skills that will benefit them in college and throughout their lives.

In the lab, students are using 3D modeling software (Solidworks) to design and CAD parts. They use those designs to machine stock aluminum and mill, saw, grind, lathe and cut parts. After assembly, the students perform their own wiring and electrical work before programming takes over. Using java, the students program the robots various motors, pneumatics and sensors to perform both automated and remotely controlled tasks. It's a full circle process and the kids do it all themselves while mentors provide guidance.

In the community, students visit other elementary and middle schools to coach and support other robotics endeavors. It's all about building the idea of gracious professionalism and promoting STEM throughout the community. FIRST Robotics, the parent organization, also offers many opportunities for students to learn leadership skills, network with other teams and earn scholarships.
