Effective Fundraiser Marketing
One of the most important parts of crowdfunding is how you market and promote your project. It’s hard to get donations if no one thinks your cause is worth their money. Knowing how to tell your story and engage your donors is crucial to running a successful crowdfunding campaign.
At Piggybackr, we understand this, and we’ve built the instruction right into our product! We guide you every step of the way to show you how to fundraise successfully online.
Piggybackr.com is a crowdfunding website for teams of all ages and experience levels. We’re the only fundraising tool that is instructional and safe for users of all ages. Set up an online fundraiser, raise money for your cause, and collect donations all in less than 5 minutes. Sign up for free.
Here are some fundraisers from our site that did a great job of marketing their campaign, and were successful at raising money online.

III. Creating a Crowdfunding Project
Create your page -
We make it super easy to get up and running, and it should only take you a few minutes to create your page - just fill in our fundraising template! Choose a high quality, bright picture. This is the first thing that your donors will see, and it lets them know that you are who you say you are. People are more likely to give when they can see your face!
(Optional) Add a video
The video should showcase your team and what you are raising money for. If you already have a video on Youtube, we’ve made it easy to find it. If not, you can record one right from your browser. It doesn’t have to be fancy, people just want to see your face and hear your passion for your project.
Tell your story
Storytelling is one of the most important fundraising skills. People want to know about you and your fundraiser. This doesn’t have to be long, but it should include why it’s important to you and why people should give to your project. This is your chance to really tug at those heartstrings and share your dedication. We make this easy and fun with our writing prompts and examples.
(Optional) Invite your team
Piggybackr is great for teams! After the team leader sets up the page and invites their team members, each team member can customize their own page in just a couple minutes. The more team members you have, the more people you can reach. Each team member can help with the marketing effort, and you can leverage all your team members’ contacts (a method called peer-to-peer or people to people fundraising).
Promote your page -
No one is going to donate to your fundraiser if they don’t know about it. We recommend that each team member sends out 30-40 emails, so gather all your contacts. Don’t know what to say? Our built-in template is already proven to be effective, but you can also write your own. Tell your supporters what you’re fundraising for and why they should give, and make your online donation request. Check out the tips below for more details.
IV. How to Market Your Crowdfunding Project
When creating your page, it’s important to speak from your heart and let your passion come through. You want your donors to know that you care a lot, and your project means a lot to you - pull at their heartstrings.
Make the description of your fundraiser emotional but also keep it short. You’re donors aren’t going to have the time to read a long description. Upload a bright picture and video to show your donors who you are, what your are fundraising for, and why they should help.
Before promoting your page to your wider audience, ask your closest friends and family to give first. It’s important to set the tone for the fundraiser, so try to make your first donations big! Then, when your next closest circle of family and friends see your page, there will already be activity on it, and they will be inspired to give a lot too!
Set up small, but meaningful, gifts for your donors. Even though you are not selling anything, it’s nice to show your supporters your appreciation. On Piggybackr, we make this easy, and include a bunch of ideas built right into the tool, like a shout out on Facebook, a thank you letter, or an autographed picture of the team. This is your chance to get creative!
Spread the word about your fundraiser by sending 30-40 emails to your potential supporters. Email is one of the most effective ways to raise money online.
Be sure to explain to them what you are fundraising for and why it is important to you. Piggybackr helps make this process easy with our built in email template. You’ll create a heartfelt email and send it out in just 5 minutes.
Check out this sample email (made with our built-in template):
Dear friends & family,
As some of you may know, I am very passionate about playing basketball. I've been playing basketball since I was 5 and ever since, I've learned how to work as a team and grow as a person.
I'm currently working hard to raise money to go to basketball camp with my team, the Thunderbirds, since my family and I are not able to afford the fees to go. It would be a great learning experience for me since I'll be able to work with other players and learn new skills from the coaches there.
This means a lot to me because I love basketball, and I want to keep improving with my team at camp.
Please check out my page: www.piggybackr.com/xx
I'd love for you to follow my progress or pass this on to your friends or business contacts who might be interested in either sponsoring me or help spread the word about my fundraiser.
Thank you for your support. It means a lot to me.
Share your fundraiser with your friends and followers on social media. It’s a great way to spread the word, and your friends can pass it on too. You can also use this opportunity to tag your donors to thank them for their support.
Keep your donors and potential donors updated throughout the fundraiser. Let them know how your fundraiser is doing, and how many days are left.. Don’t be afraid to email your potential donors a few times! Studies show that people have to see something on average 7 times before they act, so send a couple of updates before your fundraiser ends to remind them there’s not much time left.
Piggybackr has a very powerful fundraisre marketing tool that allows you to send an update to all donors, potential donors, and team members at just a click of a button. It’s a great way to send everyone an update of how the fundraiser is going in a quick and easy way.
IV. Creating an Fundraising Campaign Plan
Preparing a marketing plan can be difficult, especially when you are new to crowdfunding. What is the best fundraising strategy? When should I send my emails? When should I post updates? How many donors will I need to reach my goal? You can either look up a marketing plan example or use Piggybackr’s fundraising plan template.
Just fill in some quick information about your fundraiser, and our tool will create a customized plan for you, based on our tested successful marketing strategy. Your marketing plan has a detailed timeline with actions you need to take during your fundraiser. The outline also includes a checklist to make sure you have everything you need to run a successful fundraiser, suggestions for how many donors you’ll need, and how much every team member should raise to reach your goal.
Piggybackr itself will guide you through an effective marketing plan in the form of our smart notifications. On your dashboard, you will get notifications throughout your campaign that let you know exactly what you should be doing and when, but it’s also handy to have the entire fundraising plan laid out in front of you.
