My name is Alexa Adams, and I'm an undergraduate at UC Davis. I am an alumni of the 2010 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing (www.ncwit.org/award). I love computer programming and the unique challenges coding a program presents. I am setting out to use my skills to help a community of individuals I grew up interacting with: the deaf.
What I'm Raising Money For:
I was invited by Google to be a part of their GlassExplorers program for their new product, Google Glass. I want to develop an app for the deaf that uses Glass to provide a visual cue in the user's line of vision in response to auditory stimuli. However, just the prototype alone costs $1500, not including developer materials and fees. Unlike the other business people invited to the program, I don't have the money to pay for it.
Why You Should Give:
I grew up with an aunt who interprets for the deaf and friends who are deaf. Being deaf presents unique challenges. A car approaching from behind can't be detected by a deaf man crossing the street; a teacher calling a student's name goes unnoticed by the student busily writing notes on the page in front of her. I have the skills to adapt a device to help them, and I want to do it! For more information, check out this article: http://goo.gl/MEHbz
